Pledge to save Kavuthi Malai

Jai Nandalala!

As a part of the Navaratri inaugural session held at the Nandalala Cultural Center, Chennai, Her Holiness Pujyashri Mathioli Saraswathy spoke about a very important topic. In Her speech, Sri Amma/AKKA talked about an article that appeared in the Tamil version of The Hindu dated Oct 11, 2015.

The article highlights the claim of a portion of the Tiruvannamalai - Kavuthi Malai region by a private company for the extraction of iron ore for their use in their process. Sri Amma/AKKA spoke about this mountain, its environmental and spiritual significance and the consequences of the act of mining the mountain.

Kavuthi Malai, which is about 8 km from Tiruvannamalai town, is very sacred, for it is a part of the Agni Kshethram and iron ore is said to be symbolic of Lord Sani and Sri Lakshmi. Mining in the region will also likely have detrimental effects on water, air quality and hearing.  Thousands of medicinal herbs and streams that originate in the region, along with centuries old heritage of mountain will be lost. Sri AMMA/AKKA pointed out that while we support development, this act of mining in such an ecologically and spiritually important region could be devastating. Our disapproval and protest needs to be done in a unified and non-violent manner (Sri AMMA/AKKA cited the example of Gandhiji), and putting our minds and hearts together for this cause will help save Kavuthi malai.

Nandalala Seva Samithi is working on a comprehensive plan to formalize the mode of registering our disapproval and will have updates on this very soon.

Sri AMMA/AKKA also mentioned that we need to have a copy of the article at home in our puja room to constantly remind us of the injustice and the need for action on our part to save Kavuthi Malai.

Let us pledge our support & help stop the mining at Kavuthi Malai!

Supreme Court appointed Committee had studied this area and rejected it in 2008-09. This was after extensive survey and public hearing.

Now, it appears that Jindal has approached the Court to look into the matter again. The courts have accepted that and have constituted another committee to reload into the issue.

Deeply distressed to note that the ancient hill KAVUTHI HILLS near the Holy town of Tiruvannamali in Tamilnadu India is likely to be lost forever thanks to the aggrandisement of the irresponsible corporate greed..In the current situation when the developed nations talk of nurturing nature and heritage we in India seem to be bent on losing it entirely depriving our future generations of our flora and fauna and natural resources.I read with tears in my eyes about the possible fall out to 51 villages around this hill if the proposed plan of extraction of iron ore from this hill is resorted to.Our Mother Earth is bleeding and crying to us to be saved and we are all spectators with o0ut knowing what to do next.Newspaper repoert suggests no great emplyment opportunities, loss of substantial agricultural land, loss of river and water resources ,health issues to people living around if mining is resorted to .displacement of large no of villagers and a questionable long term commercial contractual agreements Tiruvannamalai is one of the five panchphootha Kshetras{holy place of worship} for hindus and i am at a loss to note the stony silence from all quarters.I hope National Green Tribunal is listening.I pray almighty to save our country's natural resources, hills, water ways, rivers and villages for future generation. We have no right to destry them in the name of industrialisation.I am very pained and seek public support and awareness.

Some years back in the Coimbatore district Senaikalvarayan hill was saved from quarrying activities due to public demonstrations, in which I had the opportunity to participate.

  12. If India is the spiritual centre of the world, Tiruvannamalai is its spiritual heart. In fact the Arunachala Hill is worshipped as Lord Siva himself. The wondrous herbs in these mountains form the basis of many Ayurvedic medicines. Destroying these few remaining symbols of nature is atrocious. Especially if it means loss of livelihood and dangers to the health of people in 51 villages.I strongly oppose the blasting of the Kavuthi Hills for mining iron ore. I sincerely wish that the concerned authorities would look into all these aspects - many of which cannot be valued interms of money now - but will result in much greater loss in the future, if this project is taken forward.

  14. If the project comes up it will be a great sin against God and Humanity. Sea of humanity throng to Thiruvannamalai during karthigai deepam and during full moon days, from all over the world. The project will adversely affect the eco-system in and around Thiruvannamalai and thereby pose severe health hazards to people who live there and to those visiting the place. The catatrospic implications like fields becoming barren, drying up of Sattanur Dam and respiratory ailments due to the spread of wastages and dust particles in air, is really frightening. It is unimaginable to think the survival of a place like Thiruvannamalai, which is mainly dependent on ground water, due to severe depletion of ground water levels, by use of large quantity of water, that is required for Iron ore project. We should stand up as one and oppose the project tooth and nail. It is our duty to preserve the Holy,Serene and Spirtual beauty of a place like Thiruvannamalai, so that our own desendents and future generations would cherish and seek solace and blissful experience in the lap of Mother Unnamulai Amman and Lord Arunachaleswara! Generations to come will never forgive us, if we allow this project.

  20. This news is sure to send shock waves around the world. Let us examine the spiritual aspect of it. Thiruvannamalai is worshipped as Lord Shiva. It is like breaking a part of him. It is also an abode of past and present sages. Lord Ramana who is renowned all over the world is one of them. Can we ever think of destroying it ?
Now let us look at the practical side. It is rich in herbs. The water fall will become dry. The irrigation process for the fields- livelihood for the farmers will be hit. Is all this necessary for a few crores of money ?
I join hands with all those objecting this condemnable act and also invite many to follow .
With the words of poet Oliver Goldsmith in his poem 'the deserted village ' , I close

  24. I pledge to support the Supreme Court's decision to not grant clearance for the project of iron ore mining in the Kavuthimalai hills.
I further ascend my stance by imploring Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Ltd to not appeal against the order of the Supreme Court.
This specific project would not be sustainable on several grounds. Deprivation of farmers and women their right to livelihood, cattle and other animals freedom of grazing are not the only reasons.
The land on which the proposed mining is to take place is not merely a symbol of prosperity or divinity. The land is considered as the almighty himself. There have been revered people in the past who have refrained from laying foot on that land owing to the respect they have towards Kavuthimalai hills.
Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Ltd now has the option of preventing the pain and suffering of the religious sentiments of a large number people by exploring alternatives to this particular hill. I strongly urge them to make a humane and sustainable decision.

  29. Thiruvannamalai is a very holy place. The hills are worshipped as Lord Shiva himself. Thousands of devotees all over the world visit Thiruvannamalai each year. We should do everything to maintain the sanctity of that place. The proposed iron ore mining project will cause an imbalance to eco-system and this will result in serious health issues both to people and wildlife living in the 51 villages around the area. We cannot see this happen to a shrine that is near and dear to all of us. We cannot allow thousands of people and wildlife to suffer for economic benefits. I fully support and appeal for everyone’s support to stop the proposed mining activity in Kavuthimalai hills.

Just for iron ore this mountain that is worshipped and believed by all Hindus as lord Shiva himself is going to be destroyed. So disappointed with our government for actually allowing this. It is my request to stop this atrocity from happening. Because of this there will be an imbalance in the eco system which will affect every living being from years to come. This is a damage that can never be corrected if allowed. Man should always work to preserve our history and heritage. Especially our country is so rich in its history. These are the divine places that make our history so rich. We have to conserve it instead of destroying its very being. I deeply support and appeal to stop the proposed mining in Kavuthimalai hills.

No single person has the right to mutilate a natural wonder and spiritual shelter. It is nothing short of bizzare to see business houses who sped millions on advertising and public image, now go ahead and destroy their good will because of their thoughtless actions.

  46. Its very disturbing to me that such a spiritual and holy site that is so dear to so many crores of people is proposed to be so thoughtlessly destroyed. The wealth these hills contain in them is much more than what can be 'mined'. Even if one was not to take a religious angle to this, the environmental destruction itself will be absolute. The ecology of the area lost forever. Thousands of subsistence farmers will lose their livelihoods. This madness cannot be allowed to happen. Sincerely hope that better sense prevails and the authorities take action toward the protection of this holy site.

Home to many many the trees and medicinal herbs etc. .we have no right to just wipe them all out and leave so many villages and it's people in deep trouble. The promise to plant trees in lieu of trees felled here are no compensation. What's there is all natural ,we haven't planted them. Imagine just wiping them all out without a care! That's something we have inherited and we should pass it on to the future generations
The hills must be protected and all the villages saved .

On a recent visit to Thiruvannamalai I chanced upon this little hillock..its serenity struck a chord in my heart..I thanked Mother Nature for bestowing us with such beauty as I passed by the dusty route..
Now,It is so painful to read about the avaricious intent of companies wanting to destroy this splendour for filling their deep pockets. The Jindals who propagate nature therapy in one of their health care outfits are contradicting themselves by destroying Nature! This hill is home to a plethora of plants,a sanctuary to variety of Birds and animals and not to forget the families that make a living in and around it..
How far more can we stoop by opting to destroy Nature for selfishness? It is high time we take this issue on a serious note and garner as much support to prevent such acts.
The sacredness and sanctity of all the hills in Thiruvannamalai
should be respected and protected. It doesn't augur well to touch the sanctity lest one is prepared to face the wrath of Nature aka Lord Shiva himself!

  72. Thiruvannamalai is a very sacred place and Kavuthi Malai is an integral part of this sacred place. While industrial growth is needed, it should not be at the cost of causing an imbalance to the ecosystem, not at the cost of spoiling our country's rich heritage, not at the cost of causing such a huge displacement for the agricultural community and definitely not at the cost of affecting the divinity of the place.
People visit Thiruvannamalai as a spiritual haven and an industry near such a place is akin to destroying the spirituality of the area.
Request that this industrialization is moved to other places where it does not have such ramifications.

  74. It is said in the Arunachala Mahatmyam - "By seeing Chidambaram, by being born in Tiruvarur, by dying in Kasi, or by merely thinking of Arunachala, one will surely attain Liberation” – such is the power of Mt. Arunachala and the surrounding hills and mountains of the Tiruvannamalai region. To hear that the Kavuthi malai is under threat due to potential mining activity brings me immense sadness. In our daily lives, just take a moment to think of the importance we give to something that is 50 or 100 or 150 years old – now, reflect on Tiruvannamalai, which is geologically proven to be over 2.5 billion years old. Every single rock, tree, stream and atom in that mountain is precious beyond words. Who are we to destroy such an ancient treasure? And if this treasure, which is at the heart of our spiritual faith, is under threat, it is our utmost duty to make sure this does not happen. I pledge to join Nandalala and contribute everything I can to help stop this travesty.

People both young and old religiously go round on the full moon day and it is said to bring in abundant peace or calmness for the mental well being and also refreshing for the physical fitness. Allowing iron ore mining is just doing injustice to each and every citizen of India. Let's all join hands and register a strong protest and save our mother nature from greedy people. Attempt by the private company to exploit the nature for their ulterior gain and the support extended to them by the politicians and Government officials is highly condemnable and deserves utmost contempt. Thanks to the judiciary that such mean and greedy attempt temporarily stopped for want of environment clearance. Hope such clearance will not see light with the grace of Rudra (Shiva). Let the private company not to play with the wrath of Rudra. The divine wrath will not only destroy the members of the company and other officials, politicians etc., responsible for such destruction of nature but also their family members for generations to come. On other hand if the company voluntarily desist from such activities or the persons or the system which stop the company from such inhuman activities, all will be blessed by not only the people of the land but also the divine and more boon than what they expect will be showered on them.

  178. It is very sad that such an act is occurring in this region. Let us learn to live in unison with nature and not destroy it for our selfish needs. We must all join hands to stop this atrocity and ecological damage that would be the result of this heinous act.

    ReplyDelete
  179. This destruction should not happen at all. There are many scientific and spiritual benefits mentioned about this mountain and destructing it, is not just destructing our culture/heritage, but also the destruction of all the benefits this mountain offers by its very existence. By destroying nature, we are destroying ourselves. After all, God's omnipresence is experienced through nature and the love within us towards any living being and nature. Let's show our reverence to Him by preserving this mighty and spiritual presence, the mountain form!

We have already seen the agricultural lands being taken over by real estate and we now pay the price of it through inflation and excess tax levied on us. By destroying this mountain, there is going to be a huge impact to villages surrounding it. Also, we are going to lose all of the spiritual and scientific benefits this mountain offers to us. By destroying nature, which is one of God's primary forms, we create side effects of it. We then go pray/curse God for all the side-effects or calamities that happen. This makes no sense. We are all educated and should fight against uneducated behaviors like this.
Let's say NO to this destruction unanimously as a single family living in this single beautiful and lively planet.
